In recent times, artificial intelligence has been gaining more and more attention among second language researchers. However, the emotional impact of AI-assisted instruction on English learners remains an unstudied area. To fill this gap, this study used qualitative methods to reveal the affective perception and corresponding affective regulation strategies of 498 Chinese English learners in AI-assisted second language education, and collected data through open questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results of the MAXQDA analysis showed that Chinese English learners experienced a wide range of positive and negative emotions in AI-assisted second language education. In addition, the study found that participants utilized different antecedent focusing and response focusing strategies to regulate their AI-induced emotions.
